‘Rocks From Space’

On Thursday evening we were  delighted to welcome Dr Olwyn Menzies to present the most recent in the current series of the ‘How Our World Works’ evening talks for Year 5 and 6 pupils. Through her ‘Rocks From Space’ presentation, Dr Menzies shared fascinating insights into her life as a research scientist and meteoriticist. We’d like to say a very big THANK YOU to Dr Menzies for an amazing talk and to the ‘HOWW’ team (Mrs Hickman, Mrs Allen & Mr Newman) for their time and organisation.

Thank you also to the pupils and parents from All Cannings School who joined us too.

One final celebration from Book Week…

It is significantly quieter around school this week and we’ve all missed coming into school through the rabbit hole!

I just wanted to share one final item from Book Week 2017… news of the winners of the Book Cover Illustration Competition. All competition entries were of a very high standard and the judging was very difficult but extremely enjoyable – thank you to all pupils who took the time and made the effort to join in.

Congratulations to our winners: Gilbert, Thea, Poppy, Jonty, Ava, Will and Jed 🙂 🙂

Here are their excellent book cover designs…

WOW! The week that Woodborough became Wonderland…

You will all already know that this week has been very curious one. Last weekend our school was transformed into Wonderland, (see for yourselves on our reading blog) and since Monday morning’s Big Reveal, everyone who has visited our school has entered through the rabbit hole!

We have all enjoyed an amazing Book Week 2017 and have been completely immersed in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The theme has been truly cross-curricular and has included: mathematical ‘Alice in Numberland’ and Lewis Carroll diagrams; English – the brilliant ‘Jabberwocky’ in Willow Class and writing for games for the White Rabbit in Maple Class; PE — dancing the ‘Lobster Quadrille’ in Lime Class; art – beautiful roses for the Queen of Hearts’ Garden; lots of D&T – cookery for the tea party and potion making…

Throughout the week the children have enjoyed sharing books with other classes, ‘Drop in and Read’ sessions with parents, the ‘Big Book Swap’, brilliant ‘Bedtime Stories’ (with pj’s, cookies and milk), an amazing ‘World Book Day’ with magnificent ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’, the opportunity to share the whole week at a special School Meeting and finally the School Council’s ‘Second Hand Book Sale’. It has truly been fun-packed, action-packed and hopefully memory-packed!

We would like to say an enormous THANK YOU to everyone who has lent a hand to make Book Week 2017 so spectacular. From prop lenders and makers, to scene setters, readers, costume preparers, tea party servers, guest photographers and finally tidier-uppers—it has been a brilliant team effort. We couldn’t have done it without you and it wouldn’t have been nearly so much fun—THANK YOU ALL!

The class blogs have been busy and we’ve enjoyed your comments, the website has a new gallery with brilliant photos and our Twitter following is getting bigger… if you’ve not subscribed, sneaked a peek or followed, you might find you’re missing out…
